Homepage Virus Struck Thousands of Microsoft Outlook Users Worldwide.

On May 9 2001, A computer virus described as an “email worm” called Homepage struck thousands of Microsoft Outlook users worldwide, causing serious damage.

The email carrying the worm had an attachment named homepage.HTML.vbs. Those who did not have file extension viewing enabled would see only homepage.HTML.

If the attachment, homepage.HTML.vbs, was executed, the worm would mass-mail itself to all recipients listed in any Windows address book. The worm then deleted all the sent messages from the Sent folder and the Deleted Items folder with the subject line "Homepage". The worm then modified the registry of the infected machine as an internal indicator to itself that the mailing routine had been performed.
