A New Speed Record for Blue Gene/L

On March 25 2004, Blue Gene/L, the world’s fastest supercomputer at that time, reached a processing speed of 135.5 trillion calculations a second, beating its own previous world record.

What is Blue Gene?

Blue Gene is an IBM project aimed at designing supercomputers that can reach operating speeds in the PFLOPS (petaFLOPS) range, with low power consumption.

What is Blue Gene/L?

Blue Gene/L is the first generation of supercomputers created withing the scope of Blue Gene project. The other two generation are Blue Gene/P, and Blue Gene/Q.

Blue Gene systems have led for several years the TOP500 and Green500 rankings of the most powerful and most power efficient supercomputers, respectively. Blue Gene systems have also consistently scored top positions in the Graph500 list. The project was awarded the 2008 National Medal of Technology and Innovation.

What is PFLOPS?

In computing, FLOPS (or flops, for FLoating-point Operations Per Second, also flop/s) is a measure of computer performance, especially in fields of scientific calculations that make heavy use of floating-point calculations, similar to the older, simpler, instructions per second.

  1. I remember IBM's famous chess-playing computer "Deep Blue". And now this is called "Blue Gene". What's with IBM and the word/color "Blue", I wonder..

  2. Well Diana, IBM's common use of blue in products, and packaging has to do with the fact that their old logo was in blue.
